Google revealed that it is bringing offline playback to the YouTube app for Android over the coming few weeks in India.
Offline playback ability will allow users to preload videos while they are on a Wi-Fi network so that they can view it later even on the move and save on precious data charges. While this might not be a big deal for Android users in first world countries, it is an extremely handy option to have for Android users in countries where mobile data is still extremely costly, slow and flaky.
“YouTube is popular here. You watch some videos again and again. How awesome would it be if you could keep watching them again and again without having to pay for data, and take the videos with you wherever you go. Within the coming few weeks, much of YouTube will be available offline in India. This is huge, and our users will really, really like this. You can download a video once, save it to your phone, and watch it again and again,” said YouTube’s execute Sengupta at the event.
According to Medianama’s report, users can save any video for offline viewing and there will be no restriction whatsoever in terms of playback count as well.
At the moment, it is not yet clear if Google will be bringing this feature to Android users in other part of the world or not. Keep checking for more info!
